Bonita Swalley Lonergan, 78, passed away Thursday, June 30th 2016 in Mobile, Alabama, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Decatur, Alabama, November 10th, 1937, the second of four children to John Frank Swalley and Nancy Elizabeth Campbell. The family moved to Birmingham, Alabama after their father's death, and the children were raised as if they were his own by their beloved Uncle Edwin Swalley and his wife Hazel Jones Swalley.
Bonita graduated from Woodlawn High and then set off on her life's journey, eventually to become a wife, a mother, a businesswoman, and later a grandmother and retiree. As an entrepreneur Bonita excelled. As President of Data Processing Incorporated, a company she started in Birmingham, she grew the business, landing accounts with FedEx and The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles.
Bonita eventually retired to Mobile, where she enjoyed other pursuits such as gardening, sewing and doing crossword puzzles or "just piddling". She was someone who appreciated her life and enjoyed life's simplest pleasures like a good cup of coffee and old cowboy movies.
She was a woman of faith and a member of Springhill Baptist Church in Mobile. She believed in the power and strength of God's love and in the beauty and peace that would await her after her passing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, aunt and uncle as well as her sister, Grace Swalley (Earnest) Masters. She is survived by her two daughters Denise G. (David) Miner of Mobile, AL, Karla G. (Laurence) Bloom and four grandchildren, Taylor Bloom, Adam Bloom, Ali Bloom and Alexandra Bloom of San Diego, CA; one brother, Frank (Lillian) Swalley, of Huntsville, AL and one sister, Carolyn (Bill) Swalley Travis of Montgomery, AL; as well as nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to Springhill Home Health and Hospice and to extend a special thank you to Michele Partridge and Annette Rencher for their kindness, loving care and support.
A memorial service followed by a graveside ceremony will be held Wednesday, July 6th at 2 pm at Mobile Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to services from 1-2 pm.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly suggests sending a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
