Donald Harry Carlson, age 90, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Moline, Illinois, Donald spent his early years cultivating the values that would shape his entire life: curiosity, discipline, humility, and genuine kindness toward others. A gifted athlete and dedicated student, he attended Cornell College, where he played both basketball and tennis, two sports he cherished throughout his life. After graduating, he continued his academic career at Lawrence University's Institute of Paper Chemistry, earning a master's degree that prepared him for a long and rewarding career in research and development.
Donald worked as a chemical engineer for Scott Paper, which later became Kimberly-Clark, dedicating his entire professional life to the company. Known for his meticulous approach, thoughtful problem-solving, and steady leadership, he earned the respect of colleagues and friends over decades of service. His work ethic and loyalty were hallmarks of his character.
Donald married the love of his life, Martha Kay Carlson, with whom he shared more than 50 years of marriage. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, traditions, and an unwavering commitment to their family. He also remained close to his sister, Carol Carlson, whose memory he lovingly carried after her passing.
Donald is survived by his son, Brian Carlson (Jennifer), and his daughter, Marti Geske (David), both of whom he supported and encouraged throughout their lives. He was a devoted grandfather to Sydney Carlson, Elena Carlson, Luke Geske, Lola Geske, Landen Geske, and Liam Geske. His grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent watching them grow.
In retirement, Donald embraced the hobbies he loved most: golfing, reading, and enjoying time with family. He was known for his calm demeanor, sharp mind, quiet wit, and the gentle, thoughtful way he engaged with the world. Whether offering sound advice, sharing a book recommendation, or simply listening with genuine interest, he made those around him feel valued and heard.
Donald's legacy lives on in the lives of his family, the colleagues he mentored, and the many people who were touched by his generosity, kindness, and steady presence.
