Doris Hill

Doris Ellen Hill, a resident of Mobile, Al, passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of October 23, 2022 in her home with her loving husband and daughter, at the age of 82.

Doris was raised in Burlington, OK to her parents Frank and Minnie Frey. She had one younger sister, Betty Pope. She attended Burlington School from elementary through high school. Doris was active in sports in school including basketball and tennis. She continued to stay active as adult until she broke her hip playing tennis in 1996. Doris wrote in her graduation album of 1959 her future desires were, "To become Mrs. James Hill... to have a beautiful home and build a family".

She was blessed to live out her dream and married her sweetheart, James Owen Hill, August 1959. Their marriage of 63 years was a rare and beautiful example of love, friendship, and oneness. They rarely fought and never left each other's side. They had a beautiful daughter, Laurie in 1961.

Jim and Doris moved to Mobile, Al in 1973 to open the first Otasco Department Store in the southern area. He was the president and she was his secretary. They built their home together in the following year, to which they still reside.

Doris was famous for her green thumb and ability to grown anything. Her patio and yard were a tropical oasis. She shared her plant clippings with everyone. Doris' love language was giving and she loved helping others. She provided lovingly for her granddaughters, and raised the eldest in her home. After retirement Doris took to selling Avon as a hobby which she greatly enjoyed until her final years.

Doris is survived by her husband James Hill, her daughter Laurie Ruffin, her 3 granddaughters, Brandy (Odell) Chestang, Shannon (Chad) Parnell, and Amber Ruffin Dean. She had 9 grandkids, Michael (Brianna) Jones, Mason Chestang, Miyah Chestang, Maggie Chestang, Macey Jones (deceased), Harbor Parnell, Demeigh Parnell, Parker Dean, Haven Dean, and 1 great-grandson Andrew Jones. She is also survived by her sister Betty Pope, and her husband Larry of Wichita, Kansas.

A memorial service will be held on Doris' birthday on Monday, November 7th, at 2pm at Mobile Memorial Gardens- 6040 Three Notch Rd, 36619. There will be a gathering immediately following the memorial service at 6708 Bridgewood Ct.
