Herbert Farrel Ryan, born on October 2, 1943, in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, entered eternal rest on April 27, 2025, at the age of 81. A parishioner of Little Flower Catholic Church, Mr. Ryan was an active member of the church choir where his voice and faith enriched the congregation. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Leroy H. Ryan and Clora Zirlott Ryan, as well as his brother, Leroy E. Ryan.
A proud graduate of Alba High School, Mr. Ryan maintained lifelong connections with his classmates, frequently attending class dinners where he fondly recalled his days playing football and basketball. His commitment to service was exemplified by his honorable tenure in the United States Army, where he served with distinction in the 11th Air Assault Division before its transition to the First Air Cavalry, including service in Vietnam.
Mr. Ryan is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Jo Ann Smith Ryan, whose partnership was a cornerstone of his life. He leaves behind two sons, Herbert Farrell Ryan Jr. (Michelle) and Terry K. Ryan (Stephanie). His legacy continues through his four cherished grandchildren: Christian Alexander Delery Ryan (Sydnie), Madeline Leigh Ryan, Caroline Marie Ryan, and Sarah Elizabeth Ryan, as well as his great-granddaughter, Charlotte Rae Delery Ryan.
For nearly four decades, Mr. Ryan was a dedicated employee at Scott Paper Company in Mobile, Alabama where he worked diligently in the powerhouse, earning the respect of his colleagues. Above all, he treasured moments spent with his family, creating memories that will endure for generations.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M., at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, at 12 P.M., at Little Flowers Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The pallbearers honoring Mr. Ryan's memory will be Shawn Ryan, La Roi Ryan, Barry Hendry, Tony Pirkle, Kevin Mikkelsen, and Mel Jordan. His life of service, faith, and family will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
