John Daniel "Dan" Williamson, III
August 2, 1935 - July 26, 2025
John Daniel "Dan" Williamson III passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, at his home in Mobile, Alabama, at the age of 89. Born on August 2, 1935, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Dan was the
beloved son of John Daniel "Hot" Williamson, Jr., and Mary Janella Stevenson Williamson. He was raised in a community that admired his character, and his early years were marked by his active involvement at Hattiesburg Camp School and Hattiesburg
High School, where he graduated in 1953. Dan was a Boy Scout, a DeMolay, a member of the Phi Kappa fraternity, and a talented athlete. As a member of the Hattiesburg High School football team, he contributed to their 1952 Big 8 Conference
championship. In 1960, he was inducted as a Duke into the Krewe of Zeus, a distinguished Mardi Gras organization.
Dan continued his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he graduated in 1958 and was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha (KA) Fraternity.
His professional journey began with his transformative work on production lines at a manufacturing facility in Prentiss, Mississippi. From there, he went on to negotiate contracts with the US Navy for Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS, and with the US Air Force for Metric Systems in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. After retiring, Dan moved to Mobile to be closer to his family.
Throughout the course of his life, Dan was deeply involved in his faith and community. He was a devout member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and was an active participant in the St. Vincent DePaul Society, where his service and compassion touched the lives of many. For over 40 years, Dan was a dedicated blood and platelet donor. His life was marked by kindness, generosity, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.
His personal interests included playing golf, researching genealogy, reading history, tending to his yard, and spending time with his grandchildren. Dan was always there to support his grandchildren, no matter the occasion. Whether it was cheering from the sidelines at a soccer match, basketball game, baseball game, or watching with pride at a dance recital or orchestra concert, "Grandaddy" was there-unwavering, full of love, and ready to encourage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Jonathan B. "J.B." Payne, and his beloved wife, Janis Irene Conerly Williamson. He is survived by his children: Frank (Carlene) Williamson, Jana (Paul) Holland, Dee Dee (Vinnie) Picicci, Lisa (Edgar) Maier, and Alison (Scott) Matheny. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Rachel (Rucker) Durkee, Ashley (Ryan) Laughlin, John Williamson, Jake Picicci, Paul Williamson, Joshua Maier,
Findlay Maier, Laura Williamson, Jorja Chesnut, Maggie Picicci, Luke Picicci, and Hannah Nabors, as well as his sister, Jane Williamson Jones, his nephew, Norman (Ann) Weathersby, and niece, Sharon Weathersby.
Dan will be remembered as a man of grace, integrity, and compassion, whose legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6300 McKenna Drive, Mobile, Alabama.
