Marjorie Delores Woodcock Carter, Age 89, of Mobile, Alabama, died peacefully on January 31, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born on December 29, 1934 in Gulfport, Mississippi to George Woodcock, Sr. and Juanita Corinne Fernandez Woodcock. She found her calling in life as a nurse and graduated from Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, LA. While attending nursing school, she met the love of her life, James Roy Carter, while he was in New Orleans attending seminary. They were married for 58 years until he passed in 2015. She is now reunited with the "love of her life" forever.
Delores is survived by her children, Paul (Missy) Carter, David (Diane) Carter, Maria (Chris) Thompson and Gayle Carter; her grandchildren, Bradley (Liz) Gorum, Brooke (Ian) Adkins, Jami (Michael) Brannon, Jeffrey Carter; Rachel (Carrington) Sweet and Katherine (Garry) Burns; and her great-grandchildren, Cohen Gorum, Lawson Herman, Shaw Sweet, Michael Brannon, and Grace Brannon. She is also survived by a brother, George Woodcock Jr., a sister, Patricia Weatherford, and many nieces and nephews.
From very humble beginnings, Delores devoted her life to serving Jesus Christ by helping others through her nursing career and her devotion to her church. She began her career at Charity Hospital, then worked at Biloxi VA Hospital, New Orleans VA Hospital, Chicago Hospital, and Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Camden, AL. Later, she moved to Mobile where she served at Doctor's Hospital and was promoted to Assistant Director of Nursing. Later, she played a key role in opening Knollwood Hospital, where she served as Director of Nursing and then as Director of Quality Assurance until she retired in 2000.
Delores was a very active member of Orchard Baptist Church since 1966, where she filled many roles including Sunday School Teacher and Nursery Director. She also served faithfully on many committees.
Delores Carter will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife, friend, confidant and a very strong woman of God.
