Obituary

Mary Kathren Hawsey Cahoon was born on October 6, 1927, in Brewton, Alabama. Kathren went to her reward on Tuesday evening, May 23, 2023, at 9:15 pm.  She was 95 years of age. She lived in Mobile, Alabama from her high school days until 2 ½ years ago when she moved to Birmingham.

Kathren was preceded in death by her parents E.S. and Irene Hawsey, her husband Pat P. Cahoon, her sister Dene Cook Knight and her brother Goffre W.  Hawsey.   She is survived by her two sons, David Michael (Forrest Ann) Cahoon and Philip Reid (Sharon) Cahoon, four grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mary Kathren Cahoon was a businesswoman who, as a young wife and mother, served as pastor’s secretary to two pastors of Toulminville Baptist Church.  In the following years she worked in several professional positions ending with American General Life Insurance from which she retired at age 72.

However, the greatest focus of her life was serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her family.  Among many positions in the church, she served as superintendent of the Intermediate II Sunday School department for almost 20 years and had a profound influence on the lives of many young people in the Toulminville community.   She was a Bible student and teacher, a true example of a believer!

In addition to raising her two sons, Kathren was the primary caregiver of her aging parents and the devoted friend and attendant of her beloved sister, Dene.  Following her husband’s tragic accident, she was the driving force that held her family together.  She fulfilled her duties as family matriarch with Godliness, Beauty, and Grace.  She will be sorely missed.

Services will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, May 30.  Visitation will be at 11:45 followed by the Memorial Service at 12:30 pm In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
