Michael Anthony Shavers, 63, departed this life peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 11, 2021. He was born February 5, 1958 in Scottsboro, Alabama to John and Janice Shavers.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Shavers. He is survived by his loving mother, Janice Shavers; his faithful wife Vicky Shavers; his sons, John Michael Shavers (Leslie) and Joshua Shavers (Lauren); three granddaughters, Anna Kelley, Ansley and Haisley Shavers; his sister, Vickie Shavers (Charles); his aunt, Juanita "Nita" Murray; his "work son", Adam Weekley (Katie); his "work daughter", Shanni Payne (Reagan); as well as other relatives and friends.
Our family has lost a mentor, a teacher, a father, a husband, and a brother in Christ. He was a dedicated member of Regency Church of Christ. During his Christian life, he served as a deacon and participated in missionary work, traveling as far as the Republic of Malawi in southeastern Africa to preach the gospel. He faithfully served his community for 25 years in the Mobile Police Department, retiring as a Sergeant on July 2, 2021. He graduated from B.C. Rain High School in 1976, and was awarded a scholarship to play baseball for Bishop State Community College. He was actively involved in Mobile Christian School athletics. Between 1995-2000, he helped coach the Junior Varsity and Varsity football programs. In 1996, he helped to establish the school's first golf team. From 2006 to present, he served the school as stadium security during home football games.
Above all he had a servants heart. Throughout his life he put the needs of others before his own. He had a positive impact on countless lives that extended well beyond his family. His life was filled with numerous accomplishments and he never once asked for recognition. As Jesus states in Mark 9:35 when speaking with his apostles, "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all." We will forever be proud of the life he lived and the example he left for us to follow.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 16, 2021, at 11:00 AM from Regency Church of Christ. The family will receive friends at the church Monday morning from 9:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
