Obituary

Richard T. Winkler Sr., a cherished member of the Mobile, Alabama community for more than

60 years, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024, at the age of 93, surrounded by his

beloved family.

Born on June 6, 1931, in Wallington, New Jersey, Richard was the son of Frank Winkler and

Stella Babula Winkler of Wallington. He graduated from Lodi High School in 1949 and pursued

his passion for photography at the New York Institute of Photography during the Korean War.

Richard's adventurous spirit led him to enlist in the Air Force shortly after graduation. Stationed

at Brookley Field Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama, he met and married Roberta "Bobbie"

Pringle Winkler. After their marriage, they moved to Alaska, where Richard served during the

Korean War as a reconnaissance photographer. His work included documenting plane crashes,

military equipment, and gathering critical intelligence.

Following his service in Alaska, Richard and Bobbie settled in Mobile, where they built their

lives and careers. Richard worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers for 33 years,

earning numerous awards for his excellence in photography and supervisory skills. His

evenings and weekends were often spent photographing weddings for co-workers and friends.

Together with Bobbie, they raised two sons, Richard "Tommy" Winkler Jr. (Mobile) and Brian K.

Winkler (Bon Secour) along with one granddaughter, Tyler Winkler Atwell (Daphne).

Upon retiring at 55, Richard embraced his newfound freedom with enthusiasm. He enjoyed

traveling across the country in his motorhome, attending his granddaughter's softball games,

and showcasing his competitive spirit through various games and social gatherings.

Richard's greatest legacy lies not only in his professional achievements but in his remarkable

character. Known for his humor, kindness, and zest for life, he was a beacon of joy and support

to all who knew him. His ability to connect with others and his unwavering friendliness made

him a true hero in the hearts of many.

While we grieve his passing, we take solace in the vibrant memories he leaves behind and the

knowledge that we will be reunited with him one day. To know Richard was to love him.

Richard is survived by his sons, Tommy and Brian, and his granddaughter, Tyler Atwell along

with several nieces and great nieces/nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife,

Bobbie ('09), and his parents, Stella ('85) and Frank ('90).

A memorial service will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens on August 5, 2024, at 11 a.m.,
