Captain Steven Phillip "Japanese" Johnson passed away peacefully in Pensacola, FL on Oct.25th, 2024. Born on Aug.8th 1956 in Mobile, AL to Kelly and Jackie Johnson, he was the middle child, with an older brother Russell and a younger sister Amy. He graduated from Ben C. Rain High School in 1974, and shortly thereafter entered the maritime industry which would forever be a part of his life. He immediately took to the cavalier and adventurous life of working on a river tug, starting with Waterfront Services, and going on to positions with Channel Fueling, PATCO, Capital Towing, Hollywood and Kirby Marine. For the last twenty-two years he worked for Florida Marine Transport, retiring in 2023 as a long-serving and respected captain.
Steve will be remembered as a man of many passions. His free time was occupied by watching and participating in motorcycle drag racing, attending NHRA events and spending time with those he loved. He was most passionate about Alabama football and listening to music. He was a wonderful Uncle and loved his nieces and nephews immensely. He always tried to be off for holidays, birthday parties, and any family event, large or small. Steve was a great and animated storyteller, and his tales were nothing short of legendary. He was always the highlight of any conversation he was a part of, never failing to entertain and hold the attention of those around him with his stories from the river or the road.
Steve was well liked, having many diverse friends that spanned decades of his life. People from all walks of life and different backgrounds found a friend in him. His loyalty and honor to the people he held dear was a staple of his character. He was always willing to lend a hand or to help those in need.
He married his long-time partner Diane Tonsmeire in 2015, after being together for twenty-eight years. Together they shared many wonderful times including travel, NHRA events, and shows in Biloxi at the casinos. Whenever possible, he would invite people to go along with them to enjoy their experiences as well. Many great memories were made during these times together.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Diane, brother Russell Johnson, a sister Amy Williams (Billy) and sister-in-law Paticia Lubitz. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Scott Johnson (Alicia), Nick Johnson (Morgan), Zachary Williams (Merit) and Victoria Nelson (Austin), Sarah Lubitz, Melanie L Gilstrap (Walt) as well as great nieces and nephews Nathan Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Peyton Johnson, Blake Johnson, and Reese Johnson.
