Walter "Bud" Jones, a native of Shaw, Mississippi and a resident of Mobile, Alabama passed away May 5th, 2026, at the age of 90. Bud joined the marines at the tender age of 17 and spent his 18th birthday in the Korean War, First Marine Division. Upon his four-year completion, he then joined the US Army and progressed through the ranks to E-7 and was then stationed in Berlin, Germany. Upon returning to the states, he went through helicopter training and upon completion was sent to Vietnam in 1966 and again in 1968-1969 for another 12 months. Upon returning home, he was stationed in Fairbanks, AK, Ft. Wainright, and flew chinooks until returning to FT. Rucker and retired in Dec. 1973. During his military career he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 3 Bronze Stars, 38 air medals, with V device, Senior Pilot Wings, and Expert Infantry Badge. After retiring from the Army, Bud settled in Mobile, Alabama with his family. He sold commercial real estate for Roberts Brothers for over 40 years.
He is preceded in death by; his parents, Stephen T. and Myrtle Jones; his son, Douglas A. Jones; his first wife, Helena Hanford; many brothers and sister, as well as other family members.
Bud is survived by; his daughter, Marcia (Ray) Starling; 3 grandsons, Jordan (Trisha), Eric (Ashley), and Jared (Makayla) Monroe; his brother, Clint (Anna) Jones of Mississippi; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. His burial will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Bud's visitation will be held prior to the service from 12 P.M. to 2 P.M. on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home (6040 Three Notch Rd., Mobile, AL 36619).
