William Cassel Gunter was born in Neshoba, Mississippi, on October 22, 1937, and died on June 9, 2025.
William was a US Army veteran having served in the National Guard for active duty and the reserves while stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He worked for International Paper as a purchasing specialist and retired after 40 years of service. William was an avid lover and collector of antique cars, often displaying his collection of cars (all of which were red) in various car shows. He belonged to several car clubs including Grand Bay County Cruisers, National Studebaker Club, and Old South Antique Car Club just to name a few. William was an active member of Oak Park Church of God. He was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and lived his life always putting God and family first.
William is survived by his wife, Ruth Haarala Gunter; son, William Todd (Kim) Gunter; daughter, Rhonda Gunter (Charles) Scelsi; grandsons: Andrew Tyler (Sarah) Scelsi, and Matthew William (Camille) Scelsi; brother, Byrum Gunter; sister, Shirley Gunter Patrick; sisters-in-law: Hilda Switzer Gunter, Faith Estes, Linda Harper, and Beth Clayton; brother-in-law, Larry Wells; special friends who are considered family: DeWitt and Dolly McCrary, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: F.L. Russ and Hattie Bell Gunter; his wife of 60 years, Nancy Carraway Gunter; infant son, Alvin Jerome Gunter; brothers: Mark, Olouise, Edsel (Lavana), Merwyn (Mildred), and Earl Gunter; and a sister-in-law, Betty Spence Gunter.
A viewing will be on Friday, June 13, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. - Noon at the Oak Park Church of God, 3321 Sollie Road, Mobile, Alabama. The funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. with a burial at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 6040 Three Notch Road, Mobile, Alabama.
