William Sutherland

July 13, 1941 — August 4, 2021

William D. Sutherland, also know as Satch (and as The Cookie Man at church), went to his Heavenly home on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at the age of 80. Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.

He was born on July 13, 1941, in Letohatchie, Alabama. Satch came to know the Lord personally in 2011 in Memphis, Tennessee on an Amazing Greys mission trip. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Tillmans Corner.

Satch served his country honorably in the United States Air Force, Dauphin Island 693rd Radar Squadron. He then drove for Greyhound Bus Lines for 30 years. After retiring from Greyhound, he continued to drive charter buses for Trailways and Kingdom Coach.

He was an avid bass fisherman and member of the Mobile Bassmasters Bass Club. He also enjoyed Ham Radio and was a member of the Deep South Amateur Radio Club and the Mobile Amateur Radio Club. His extensive list of interest also included wood working, especially making porch swings for his family and friends.

Satch was a 32nd degree Mason and past Master of the Toulmin Lodge #875. A little known fact about him is that he was commissioned by the United States Coast Guard to help with bringing the USS Alabama into the Mobile Bay, where it sits today.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Maddox Sutherland; mother, Doris Sutherland; brother, Harry Sutherland, Jr.; and stepson, Dennis Morgan.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Sutherland; children, David Sutherland (Candi), Mark Sutherland, Susan Dezauche (Danny), and Shanna Walker (Will); nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; uncle, Jim Sutherland; and numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held Monday, August 9, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with Brother Mark Griffin officiating. Burial will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Anderson, a friend and fellow member of the Deep South Amateur Radio Club, Bill Moore, a friend and fellow member of the Mobile Bassmasters Bass Club, and his grandsons, Zack Sutherland, Hunter Dezauche, Logan Dezauche, and Chase Sutherland.
