Dolores was born to Edward and Viola Caverlee Marshall in Chicago Illinois, October 8, 1930. She was the oldest of 5 children. After the war, John and Dolores settled in Alexandria, Louisiana where John took a position with Delta Air Lines. It was in Alexandria where their three children where born: John Alan, James Andrew and Julie Ann.
