Obituary

James Leland Miller (Jimmy) passed peacefully Friday, June 3, 2022 at The Retreat, Saad's Hospice facility at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory Delbert Miller and Bernice Cox Miller, as well as his son, James Leland Miller, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Suzanne, his son Tod (Jessica) and his grandchildren Silas, Maggie, Sarah, SJ, & Phoenix.
Starting out at Ingall's Shipbuilding in the computer department meant shiftwork for him. His wife shared that they would leave notes on the refrigerator during the week as they worked on different schedules until the weekends. Purchasing won out over computers so he started buying equipment for those Navy ships. He was awarded Master Shipbuilder status for having worked in the industry for 40+ years from that first computer job to Manager of subcontracts, Jimmy retired from Ingall's Shipbuilding in 2008.
He loved golf and played every chance he could, He followed it on television and traveled to the Masters to see some of the greats play the game! Another hobby was his yard. He loved yard work and spent many hours getting things just the way he liked them! In his last few days, he gave his son,Tod, strict instructions about how to keep the yard looking good! Last but not least, he loved baseball. Coaching from before he even had children to playing the game himself. Playing softball for Sage Avenue Baptist was great fun especially with his sons playing on the same team! He and his friend, Ron Crutcher, tried their hand at tennis as well. You need wrist bands, sweat bands for your head, and just the right shoes and socks. After they put all that on for their match, then they added elbow pads, knee pads, and various braces. They looked like the geriatric versions of John McEnroe!!
Although not known as an avid conversationalist, he was a Facebook guru! The posts he shared were either oldies songs or encouraging words! He was a faithful member of the Fellowship Sunday School class and Christ United Methodist Church. Jimmy could often be seen loading up tab tops for Ronald McDonald House and taking them to the recycling center. He also enjoyed and learned from the Friday Bible study with the guys at Goldfinger's.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mobile at 1626 Springhill Avenue, Mobile, AL 36604.
