September 30, 1925 — November 17, 2019

Sept. 30, 1925 – Nov. 17, 2019

A private family graveside service was held Tuesday, November 19, 2019 with Rev. Garry Harred officiating. Marie was a member of the “Greatest Generation”. She was born and raised in Altoona, AL, was a hard worker and loved her family. After high school graduation she attended Gadsden Trade School and then came to Mobile, AL to work at Brookley AFB. Sometime along the way she met two girls who would be her lifelong friends, Frances Hethcox Graham and Helen Self Davis. They worked as machinists, drill press operators and milling machine operators during WWII. Marie met William F. Matthews on VE Day in 1945. Marie, her friends and Willie’s sisters, Eloise and Audrey, were going to Downtown Mobile for the celebration in Audrey’s car when they saw Willie waiting for a bus and picked him up. His ship, the Magnolia, had just docked at the foot of Virginia Street. They were married September 14, 1946. Cooking wonderful meals, providing for her family and putting their needs above hers was how Marie lived her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William F. Matthews (2005); her parents, John and Bertha Golden; her brother, Howard Golden and his wife, Bonnie; sisters, Mary Phillips, Christine Erwin and her husband, Butch; brothers-in-law, Norman Havens and Dale Musick; her sisters-in-law, Eloise Piele and her husband, Harry, and Audrey Agerton and her husband, Herman. Her survivors include her children, Cynthia (David) Sanders, Billye (John) Howard and Valerie (Rick) Walton; her grandchildren, Matt (Heather) Sanders, John Howard, Jr.; her beloved, granddaughter, Holly (Tom) McDaniel; grandsons, Justin (Angela) Walton, and Jay (Jaime) Walton; her great- grandchildren, Tanner, Cate, Samuel, Abbey, Jake, Julianna and Alice; her sisters, Lois Havens, Ruth Musick, and Marlene (Garnett) Jackson; her brother-in-law, Jack Phillips; numerous nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
