Milton Varner

April 24, 1931 — June 8, 2021

Milton Clark Varner, aged 90, was born on April 24, 1931, in Rome, MS and passed away on June 8, 2021 in Mobile, AL after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ann, his daughter MaryAnn (Mark), four grandchildren, Samuel (Sydney), Sarah (Ray), Nathaniel and Autumn; and two great-grandsons, James and Shepherd. He was the oldest of six children born to Robert and Ruby Varner: sister Jo Ann Grant, who preceded him in death, brother Bobby Varner (Shirley), and sisters Mary John Duff (Brian), Sue Wagner, and Betty Gurley (Toby), along with a close-knit family of nieces, nephews and cousins. Milton spent his childhood in Tuscaloosa and his young adulthood in Mobile where he attended Murphy High School. While still a student there, he joined the Navy during the Korean conflict and was then stationed in San Diego and Honolulu. After his time in the Navy, he returned to Mobile and spent most of his career as an engine foreman with CSX, formerly the L&N railroad. He learned to fly small planes as a young man and had a lifelong interest in photography, videography and repairing and renovating houses until he was no longer physically able to do so. He was eager to keep up with changing technology and even though that became more difficult as he aged, he was always trying to learn. He kept a workshop full of his "treasures," ("junk" to most) "just in case" he needed them for his own projects or to help someone else with theirs. He and Ann attended Dauphin Way Baptist Church for many years, then were faithful members of Deeper Life Fellowship, where his son-in-law was pastor, and finally attended Covenant Church of Mobile in his latest years. His generosity, humor and dependability will be deeply missed by his family. Until we are all together again, we are grateful he has always been there for us.
