Walter Harrison, Sr.

January 7, 1935 — June 8, 2020

Walter Edward Harrison Sr., age 85, passed away on Monday, June 8th, 2020, surrounded by his family in Mobile, Alabama. Walter was born on January 7th, 1935 in Crichton, Alabama. He and his wife Shirley raised two children together.

Walter served in the U.S. Army from April 11, 1957, to April 10, 1959, and served in Korea. He was honorably discharged as “Specialist Fourth Class” (E-4). After serving in the Army, he worked at Canada Dry, did surveying work, and was a salesman for Southern Merchants until retirement. He was in the National Guard, Dixie Division, from 1952 to 1954. Walter was in the United States National Defense Corp in the Third Brigade. He was elected as an Alabama State Constable for Precinct #94 and proudly served from January 2008 until his death.

Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He was a friend to everyone and had a wonderful sense of humor. He attended Good Shepherd Baptist Church and especially enjoyed the monthly breakfast with the men’s prayer group. He found great joy in helping others through volunteering at various shelters, food banks, and feeding families at the Salvation Army on Thanksgiving Day with his grandchildren. In 2005, he was named Man of the Year by AARP Chapter 5346 for selflessly dedicating over 1,000 hours of labor for manning shelters during and after two devastating storms, Ivan and Katrina. Walter enjoyed fishing, eating at Lighthouse Restaurant, visiting the Bayou La Batre Fire Station, and watching his favorite football team, Alabama - Roll Tide! He was Alabama’s biggest fan and never missed a game.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Montgomery Harrison and Ollie Mae (Lambert) Stokes; wife: Shirley Harrison; Sisters: Ethel Mae Harrison, Mary Williams, Dorothy Sasser, and Sarah Dart.

He is survived by his loving children, Walter E. Harrison, Jr. and Sherri (Bryan) Lamberth; Grandchildren: Brooke (Mathew) Koenig, Morgan (Chris) Henry, Gavin Lamberth, Carson Lamberth; Great Grandchildren: Adley Blake Koenig and Perrin Wren Koenig.
