May 9, 1935 – May 30, 2020

JoAnne Holland McKnight passed away gracefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, May 30th, 2020 from natural causes. She is survived by her husband, Carlos F. McKnight; her son, Carlos Michael McKnight, and daughter, Suzanne McKnight Crist. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and siblings shared warm memories of her happy life as she slipped into peace. JoAnne was a loving and generous mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend, who gave freely of her limitless energies to serve her family, friends, and the Mobile community. She was a tireless volunteer for many local charities, and a local color-writer and blogger. Her dedicated writing brought joy to all as she shared good news, happy events, and fascinating biographies with her regular columns. JoAnne was born in Deer Park, AL in 1935. She and her husband, Carlos F. McKnight, celebrated 64 years of marriage in March. She worked at Brookley Field in the 50s and devoted her energies to raising Mike and Suzanne. She was a life-long learner, graduating from South Alabama after becoming a grandmother. She soon earned her master’s degree as well as taught classes in which she had been a student only a few years earlier. She supported and nurtured her grandchildren, Charles and Brandon, ensuring their young lives were full of sports, art, music, love, and laughter. JoAnne loved history, literature, and good times with friends and family. You could often find her over a crossword puzzle, word game, or even cards or dominoes on special occasions. Please join us by honoring JoAnne’s generous spirit by donating food or funds, instead of flowers, to Central Presbyterian Food Pantry, who’s amazing work supports our neighbors most in need during these difficult times. Close family honored JoAnne’s memory with a small, joyful ceremony on Monday, June 1, 2020 as friends and neighbors lined the street before the McKnight residence, brightening the ceremony with memories and stories, a visible sign of JoAnne’s lasting impact on Mobile. Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com.
